![]() ![]() I awake from a short sleep on a dirty bedroll underneath a bypass inhabited by a group of cutthroat mercenaries I gather my things, and head off in the direction of the slip road onto the overpass. Well worth a play if you’re interested in story despite how short it can be. Overall I think that Firewatch is one of the better games of it’s sort that i’ve played and it did a fantastic job with its storyline as well as with its visuals without falling into the usual traps that surround this genre of games. Firewatch’s response to this is by adding exploration to the game and letting the player do as much as they can within the sections of the game and adding different pathways to take that are completely different. The main culprit of this sort of thing has to be ‘Everybody’s gone to the rapture’ which in its own right has a fantastic story but just being able to walk around and not much else doesn’t bode well for people who aren’t completely drawn in. Overall I think it was well worth what I spent on the game and it didn’t fall into the traps that lots of games of this sort do most of which being, making the game look really good and have sprawling landscapes without actually having any kind of interaction other than walking. To prevent spoiling the game too much I will leave it there and move onto the gameplay of this 4-5 hour story. The story will give you small hints and snippets to hang onto which will stick in your mind powering the source of the suggestion to the point that by the end you will be wondering which way any of this could possibly go and to be honest to the game I had no idea what direction the game was going to take but I do think that the direction it took was a good one. The story goes on to reveal that it isn’t just you and the voice… Throughout the game the storytelling will change slightly depending on what you tell the voice on the radio about yourself and due to this I really found myself channeling my emotions through Harry and really getting immersed in the story of the game and I feel this is the reason I got so drawn in. The only other human contact you have is a voice coming through a radio. You’ve just taken a job being a fire watchman over the summer and the story develops from there. Your wife gets Alzheimers and she moves to Australia to be looked after by her parents. The game starts with a story about you and your wife, the story goes from how happy you and your wife are together, moving out together, getting the dog and planning to have kids and then the game knocks you straight in the feels. ![]() The release of an indie game which could easily be described as a walking simulator doesn’t really excite me but when I saw the raving reviews and people losing their minds about Firewatch I decided to give it a go and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised at not only the quality but also the depth that the game goes into to build verisimilitude for the story I found myself finishing the game in one sitting due to how it sucked me in so well. ![]()
